Volunteers will help give out and install smoke alarms at some Wichita homes Saturday, American Red Cross and fire officials announced Friday.
The effort will focus on part of the 67214 zip code area, in the central part of the city. That area has had the highest number of fire deaths, said Michelle Jantz, executive director of the regional American Red Cross.
People interested in volunteering for the effort can register by calling 316-219-4048 or going to redcross.org/ks. Volunteers will meet at 8:30 a.m. at the American Red Cross, 1900 E. Douglas.
At Friday’s announcement of the smoke alarm effort, fire Battalion Chief Stuart Bevis said that every home should have smoke alarms on every level at least and in every bedroom.
