About 250 to 300 Spirit AeroSystems employees in Wichita this week started a furlough that will go through the end of July because of excess inventory, company spokesperson Joe Buccino said Tuesday.

About 100 of those employees were already on a furlough that started May 12 and were set to return to work this week, he said. That furlough affected about 250 to 350 employees.

“The reason remains an excess of inventory on certain products,” he said Tuesday.

The furlough in May was tied to overproduced parts for the thrust reverser, which help planes slow down when they land.

Spirit is one of the city’s largest employers with roughly 12,000 employees in Wichita.
