Kansas Highway Patrol to host fishing event for kids

The Kansas Highway Patrol is partnering with several local police departments to host the Catch a Special Thrill for Kids event June 13 at Harvey County East Lake.

Professional fishermen and law enforcement officers volunteer to spend the day teaching disabled and underprivileged children about natural resources and how to fish. The Highway Patrol has hosted the event for the last 10 years.

Event director Tom Spencer said about 40 children ages 6 to 14 years old will participate in the event. They will be given fishing gear and other supplies donated by sponsoring organizations.

After a morning of fishing, there is a barbecue lunch and an awards ceremony where children receive certificates of participation.

The event will begin at 8 a.m. and end in the early afternoon. To register, contact Tom Spencer at 316-258-6207 or tsspencer@khp.ks.gov. Visit www.castforkids.org for more information.
