Sheriff’s Office: Teen shooting case was accidental; search for suspects called off

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office is no longer looking for suspects in the case of a shooting that injured a teen last week near Clearwater, it said Thursday in a news release.

The incident was originally reported as a home invasion, but subsequent investigation led the office to reclassify the case as an accidental shooting, the release said.

A 17-year-old boy reported that someone had broken into his house in the 11100 block of West 95th Street around 10:30 p.m. May 21. That’s about a mile northeast of Clearwater.

He reported he was shot in the abdomen during a struggle with two burglars, according to the release. He originally was taken to the hospital in critical condition but has since been released.

At the time, he provided authorities with descriptions of the two burglars; authorities in turn asked the public for help in solving the crime.

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office will work with the District Attorney’s Office to determine whether any further action will be taken in the case, the release said.
