Possible human remains were found in a coffin hidden in the attic of a building in Derby, the city said Monday night.
At around 10 a.m. Monday, workers renovating a building in the 100 block of West Market called police after making the discovery.
The coffin may have been there for “an extended period of time,” Kristy Bansemer, communications director for the city of Derby, said in an email.
The Derby Police Department and the Sedgwick County Coroner’s Office are working to determine whether the remains are human, Bansemer said. Experts will be called to determine an age and gender of the remains.
Anyone with information is asked to call police at 316-788-1557 or 911.
