A large pipeline fire in Harvey County near West Dutch and Hertzler Road west of Hesston has been contained, officials said.

Harvey County dispatchers say they were called about the explosion at 7:35 a.m. No one was injured and there was no structural damage.

Dispatchers said flames were shooting 75 to 100 feet into the air and asked that residents avoid the area of the fire. Morning commuters on Interstate 135 told The Eagle that they could see flames from the roadway.

The pipeline was shut off and the flames continued as crews waited for the gas to bleed out.

The gas pipeline belongs to Southern Star. According to their website, Southern Star transports natural gas to Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska and Texas through 5,800 miles of pipeline.

Firefighters, EMS, Southern Star employees and law enforcement are still on the scene as of 10:30 a.m.

"Southern Star is in the process of gathering more information about the incident," spokesperson Nathan Isbell said in an email to The Eagle.

Another spokesperson, Rob Southard, told the Associated Press that crews won't begin repairing the pipeline until the area cools of. He said there was no excavation work being done in the area beforehand.
