A fire has broken out on the property of the old Joyland amusement park in south Wichita Tuesday afternoon.
The fire includes both grass and a structure — apparently a storage building — on the back of the property where the long-closed, now dismantled amusement park stood for so many years. Numerous motorists driving by on I-135 called 911 to report the fire at 4:30 p.m., a Sedgwick County emergency dispatch supervisor said.
A fire was reported in the 2400 block of East Wassall, as well as a structure fire in the 2800 block of South Hillside - both related to the same fire.
While the smoke was rising almost straight up in the sky as the evening commute intensified, the Kansas Highway Patrol has been alerted to provide traffic control as necessary.
