UPDATE: Police investigating near drowning of toddler

A 1-year-old was taken to the hospital Sunday afternoon after nearly drowning at a Wichita apartment complex, authorities said.

Police were called at around 3 p.m. to the 1100 block of South Woodlawn at Park East Apartments, a Sedgwick County Dispatch supervisor said. That’s south of Lincoln.

Officer Charley Davidson said Monday that the boy and a 3-year-old were in the bathtub on the second floor of an apartment with a low-level of water. The 1-year-old’s father then went into the shower, located in the same bathroom separated by a door.

While he was showering, one of the toddlers was able to turn the water back on, causing it to overflow. A 22-year-old woman and 20-year-old man who were downstairs noticed the water and ran upstairs to check on the kids, Davidson said.

The 1-year-old was found face down and taken to the hospital in critical condition. It’s not known how long the boy was face down, or how long the children had been left unsupervised.

The incident is still under investigation.
