A Sedgwick County inmate housed at a southwest Kansas jail died Monday after a fight with another inmate.

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office, in an e-mail, said the paramedics tried to save the injured inmate’s life but were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at the Meade County Jail at about 7:20 p.m.

The inmate, a 30-year-old Wichita man, had been in custody on misdemeanor charges for nearly a month. He was among more than 40 Sedgwick County Jail inmates being housed at the Meade County Jail, the sheriff’s office said.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is investigating the death. The sheriff’s office was not releasing the man’s name at his family’s request, the e-mail said.
