Two people were taken to a local hospital after a house fire Sunday night in northeast Wichita.

Firefighters received the call for a blaze at a residence in the 1700 block of North Bluff at 10:48 p.m.

Wichita Fire Battalion Chief Stuart Bevis said a 68-year-old man and his 70-year-old brother were transported to Via Christi Hospital St. Francis with critical injuries.

The younger brother was initially not breathing when firefighters arrived, Bevis said, though he was stabilized and was later talking with fire investigators. The older brother was found in the basement of the house.

Bevis said a smoke alarm in the home alerted the younger brother to the fire before he called for help.

“The 70-year-old suffered burns and smoke inhalation,” Bevis said. “He remains in critical condition at the St. Francis burn unit.”

Bevis said the fire is estimated to have caused about $40,000 in damage to the structure and about $20,000 to the contents of the house.
