Couple with health woes behind on bills

Share the Season is an annual campaign that offers one-time aid to people affected by unforeseen hardships. The people are not identified to protect their privacy.

For 30 years, he's worked hard as a custodian.

His wife worked hard, too.

But this past year, she's had two strokes. In April, she had a knee replacement.

And when he took off three weeks to help in her recovery, the couple quickly fell behind in paying their bills.

They haven't been able to catch up.

"It threw us in a heck of a bind," he said.

"Things are just rough right now," he wrote on their application for Share the Season. "My wife has applied for permanent disability but so far it has not come through. She is on her third appeal."

He has heart problems and uses oxygen at night.

"I wish I could afford to retire but I can't."

Share the Season can assist with a variety of payments, including mortgage, utilities and medical bills. It does not offer assistance for rent payments.
