Garden City cop nominated for heroism award

GARDEN CITY — A Garden City police officer who saved a woman's life by shooting a man who was attacking her has been nominated for a national award.

In January 2010, officer Doug Heit went to the home of Maria Castillo and found her ex-husband stabbing her. He shot Gustavo Ramos-Beleta, who was later convicted and sentenced to more than 48 years in prison for the attack.

Garden City police Sgt. Michael Reagle nominated Heit for the America's Most Wanted All Star Award. If he's chosen in an online vote, Heit could win $10,000, a trip to Washington, D.C., and a trip to the NASCAR Sprint Series in Charlotte, N.C.

The Garden City Telegram reported that Heit said that if he wins, he'll give Castillo $5,000 of the award.
