Paying bills difficult for mother, even while working three jobs

Share the Season is an annual campaign that offers one-time aid to people affected by unforeseen hardships. The people are not identified to protect their privacy.

She's a single mother with a degree in psychology who works three jobs — two of them part-time — and still can't quite make ends meet.

"The income just doesn't cover the bills right now," she said.

So when the plumbing system in her old house backed up last month, she was left wondering how she could handle a major repair bill.

"One day I was doing too much laundry and it all backed up," she said.

Today, she said, her toilet won't flush and her bathtub won't drain.

"Anything that requires water — flushing the toilet, all of the above — doesn't work," she said.

She said tree roots have apparently clogged her septic tank system. She's waiting for an estimate on the cost of getting the pipes unclogged.

She said she drives to her father's house with her 11-year-old daughter to use the bathroom.

"It's not very fun."

Two days after the plumbing stopped working, she said, she incurred another unexpected expense when her dog broke a leg.

She's hoping that refinancing the mortgage on her home will lower her house payments next year and allow her to get in front of her bills again.

Until then, she said, she is hoping Share the Season donors will help her get through the holidays.

"Any little extra helps," she said.

Share the Season has received $73,547 so far. Among recent donors:
