School board OKs funds for repairs, new property

The Wichita school board on Monday approved more than $500,000 in structural repairs to Allison Traditional Magnet Middle School and purchased property intended for a new south Wichita elementary.

The district had already contracted $140,000 in repairs to bring Allison — on South Seneca near Douglas — up to code. In July, the district filed suit against three engineering and construction firms involved in the project, claiming renovations made as part of the 2000 bond issue were unsafe and a violation of building code.

At Monday's meeting, the board approved a contract with Eby Construction Co. for another $518,000 in structural repairs.

The board also approved the purchase of three properties near Lewis Open Magnet Elementary near 47th South and Seneca. The district agreed to pay about $350,000 to purchase property it needs to build a new building at that site.

The board also bought property at 1524 N. Salina, near Marshall Middle School, to allow for expanded parking at the school.
