Man burned in crash in severe condition

A 40-year-old Bentley-area man was in severe condition Friday after suffering burns when his car — already spewing flames — crashed into a house in northwest Sedgwick County and became engulfed in fire, an official said.

Witnesses saw flames coming from an area around a rear tire as the car went down the road shortly before it crashed into a house in the 10400 block of 151st Street West, near Bentley, at about 7:15 a.m. Friday, said sheriff's Lt. Dave Mattingly.

It seems likely that whatever started the initial flames caused the car to crash, Mattingly said. One possible cause could have been a problem with the braking system, but it will take a thorough investigation of the destroyed car to pinpoint the reason, Mattingly said.

"With that extensive injury, we're going to want to know what caused that."

The man had flames on him as he ran from the car, Mattingly said.

The one person in the home was not injured, he said.

An ambulance took the man to the burn center of Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis. According to an initial report, he had third-degree burns over 60 percent of his body.

Mattingly said he could not yet release the man's name.
