State launches volunteer clearinghouse website

A website focusing specifically on state volunteer opportunities is launching today at www.volunteerkansas.org.

Nola Brown, executive director of Volunteer Kansas, said the site would save people from sifting through organizations' national websites when they are looking for local volunteer opportunities.

"It's designed for Kansans to be able to help Kansans," she said.

Eight local organizations will be featured on the site: Habitat for Humanity, Catholic Charities, Youthville, Kansas Humane Society, Exploration Place, Sedgwick County Zoo, Salvation Army and Wichita Festivals. Eventually, Brown said the site will highlight organizations across the state, as well as more Wichita groups.

The site will have ways to get involved and an online classified page where organizations can say what they need and people can supply them. Visitors to the site can also donate money to help featured individuals get back on their feet, Brown said.

A grant through the Barry L. and Paula M. Downing Charitable Foundation is funding the project.
