MULVANE — A 22-year-old man died Thursday after his car struck the back of a Fed Ex truck that was stopped to turn left from K-53 west of Mulvane, a sheriff's official said.
The man was pronounced dead about noon after being taken by ambulance to Wesley Medical Center, Sedgwick County sheriff's Lt. Brad Hoch said. The man's name was not being released until his relatives could be notified. He apparently lived in Mulvane, Hoch said.
The truck driver was not injured.
The accident occurred about 10:45 a.m.
According to witnesses, the westbound truck was stopped on K-53 with its turn signal on as the driver waited to turn left onto South Oliver. For some unknown reason the car hit the rear of the truck, Hoch said.
It's not clear whether the car driver could have been distracted or had some medical condition right before the accident, he said. The impact destroyed the front half of the car, a gold Honda Accord.
A preliminary investigation found no skid marks.
Hoch did not know the speed of the car. The speed limit on that stretch of K-53 is 55 mph.
