Man charged in North Newton boy's death also charged in child pornography case

A man already charged with aggravated battery and abuse of a 19-month-old North Newton boy also has been charged with 16 counts of sexual exploitation of a child involving pornography in a separate case, an official said.

Harvey County Attorney David Yoder said he filed the exploitation charges Friday against Chad D. Carr, 26, who was charged earlier this week with multiple counts of aggravated battery and child abuse over injuries to 19-month-old Vincent Hill. The boy died Saturday.

Carr is the boyfriend of Vincent's mother, Katheryn Nycole Dale, who has been charged with child endangerment, child abuse and aggravated battery over the injuries to her son.

Yoder said the pornography charges against Carr allege that he possessed child pornography videos.

Carr's brother, Christopher D. Carr, 29, has been charged with the same pornography crimes, Yoder said.

The charges allege that the pornography was downloaded, possessed or reviewed between October 2008 and March 2009, Yoder said.

The charges are completely separate from the charges involving injuries to the boy, Yoder said.

After authorities developed the case against Chad Carr in the toddler's death, they decided to accelerate their investigation of the pornography case, Yoder said.

Even if authorities had been able to charge and arrest Chad Carr in the pornography case earlier, there is no guarantee he wouldn't have had access to the boy, Yoder said.

Chad Carr and Dale, Vincent's mother, had been living together for about four months at a duplex in North Newton, authorities said.

Chad Carr is being held on a $150,000 bond on the charges involving the toddler. He also is being held on an additional $75,000 bond in the pornography case, Yoder said.
