Part of Kellogg will close for deputy's funeral

Several west Wichita roads — including a section of Kellogg — will be closed for several hours today for the funeral of Sedgwick County sheriff's Deputy Brian Etheridge, who was killed Monday while on duty.

Both the eastbound and westbound lanes of Kellogg will be closed between Maize Road and 135th Street West from about 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., according to the Sheriff's Office.

That stretch of highway is near Resthaven Cemetery, where Etheridge will be buried. Officers will divert motorists to detours.

The funeral will begin at 10 a.m. at St. Peter Catholic Church in Schulte. About 2,000 people — many of them law enforcement officers and including Kansas Gov. Mark Parkinson — are expected to attend.

Sedgwick County sheriff's Lt. Dave Mattingly said that because of the closed roads and the number of people expected to attend the funeral, "that area will be very congested for several hours."

Other roads that will be closed are:

* 119th Street West between Maple and MacArthur Road, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

* K-42 between the St. Peter parking lot and MacArthur Road, and westbound MacArthur Road to 119th Street West from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Mattingly said that many surrounding law enforcement departments have offered to cover Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office calls during the service and burial.

"They have all given their support," he said.

"Calls will be handled."
