A 32-year-old man suffered critical injuries in a running gun battle with another man on a south Wichita street Saturday night, Wichita police said.
An initial investigation indicates the wounded man is suspected of going to the 1900 block of Rita to confront a 24-year-old man, Wichita police Sgt. Roger Runft said.
The two reportedly fired at each other, but only the 32-year-old was wounded, Runft said. It appears that houses along the block were struck by bullets, he said. The crime scene extends about 100 yards.
Runft gave this account of the incident: At about 7:45 p.m. on Saturday, police were dispatched to the 1900 block of Rita, near Pawnee and Meridian, on reports of a suspicious person driving along the street. Minutes later, neighbors called in reports of shots fired.
Two neighbors who didn’t want to be identified said they heard three to four shots. One said it sounded like fireworks.
It appears the 32-year-old man might have gone to confront the 24-year-old at a residence there, Runft said.
The 32-year-old was taken to a Wichita hospital in critical condition.
There were multiple witnesses to the shooting, Runft said. The men were shooting at each other as they were running, he said.
