These Wichita-area ZIP codes have doubled COVID-19 cases since the week before reopening

Twenty-one ZIP codes in the Wichita area have at least doubled their number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the past six weeks, according to statistics from the Sedgwick County Health Department.

The biggest percentage increases were in downtown Wichita, Haysville and southeast Wichita by McConnell Air Force Base, where the ZIP code each quadrupled or more their number of cases.

The data comes from the online COVID-19 dashboard of the health department, which releases new numbers by ZIP code every Monday. The increases are compared to the numbers from May 18, which was the week when the ZIP code map was first introduced.

May 18 was two weeks into the governor’s phased-in reopening plan and marked the start of phase 1.5. A little more than a week later the plan became a recommendation instead of requirement as all state and local restrictions on the economy were lifted.

Since that time, confirmed cases and active cases of COVID-19 have been on the rise in Sedgwick County.

As of May 18, there were 536 known cases of COVID-19 in the county. On Monday, there were 1,161 cases. During those six weeks, the county’s case count has increased 116%.

There are now eight ZIP codes with at least 50 confirmed cases.

The ZIP code with the most cases is 67204 in north Wichita, which has 83 cases. Cases there are up by 54, which equates to a 186% increase between May 18 and Monday. The 54 new cases was the most of any ZIP code during that time period.

The west Wichita ZIP code of 67212 had the most cases a month and a half ago at 42. It increased by 83% to 77 cases, putting it as the ZIP code with the third-most cases. It is behind 67203 in west Wichita, which hit 78 cases with a jump of 144%.

The five other ZIP codes have at least 50 confirmed cases are 67026 in the Clearwater area, 67216 in south Wichita, 67218 and 67207 in east Wichita and 67202 in downtown Wichita.

The 67202 ZIP code in downtown Wichita had the biggest increase in cases at 614%. The 67210 ZIP code on the east and west sides of the Air Force base went up 367%. The 67060 ZIP code in the Haysville area is up 308%.

Four more ZIP codes — 67206, 67211, 67217 and 67218 — had cases go up by at least 200%.

The county’s online map does not list the percentage change in cases over time. The Eagle calculated the percentage change in cases by taking the current number of cases based on county data from May 18 and June 29.

Testing rates based on 20 or fewer tests are considered unreliable by the county health department. For total tests and total confirmed cases, if a ZIP code has five or fewer of either category, the county does not report the exact number. No exact percent change could be calculated in those instances.

Two ZIP codes — for McConnell Air Force Base and Wichita State University — do not have data because they have no population.

Many of the ZIP code areas in Sedgwick County extend into neighboring counties. A Sedgwick County official previously told The Eagle that the ZIP code population data on the map includes people who live in other counties, but the number of tests and cases only include Sedgwick County residents. The testing rate includes Sedgwick County residents who were tested compared to the total population of the ZIP code, including other counties.

Names of towns from other counties are included solely as a reference for the relative location of the ZIP code.
