Hinkle Law Firm to move to new building at the Waterfront

Wichita-based Hinkle Law Firm will be first tenant in a dramatic new office building now under construction at the Waterfront, at 13th and Webb.

The firm will move its 40 attorneys and 70 other staff into three floors of the seven story, 80,000-square-foot building, which will be built and owned by Murfin Inc. The building will be named for the Hinkle firm.

The building will sit on the lake between the Commerce Bank and Delta Dental buildings.

The law firm currently occupies three floors at the Epic Center downtown and one and a half floors in the Wilson Estates Office Park, near 21st and Rock Road, which combined is nearly 50,000 square feet.

The firm expects to make its move in August 2016.

Mike Herd, the firm’s co-managing partner, said they were approached about the move, but firm members have been looking for space to consolidate for about four or five years.

The firm has been in the Epic Center since it opened in 1988. But a good bit of the firm’s growth has come from the east side. A small side office in the Polo Office Park turned into nearly two floors in Wilson Estates in 2004. The firm is now about evenly divided between the downtown and east side locations.

“It’s better for management of the firm and firm collegiality,” Herd said. “We all desired to be in one location.”

They had turned down a number of offers, he said. But the location, the unusual terraced-design of the building swayed them.

“It is very unique,” he said. “There isn’t any other building like it in Wichita, or even in Kansas.”
