Julie Westphal carries on family tradition with new store

Julie Westphal says the jewelry business is in her blood. She’s worked at her family’s jewelry store in Hutchinson for the last six years and now is opening Jules By J. Westphal at Clifton Square.

Like Ian Stewart, Julie Westphal also is opening a business at Clifton Square next month.

After working at her family’s longtime R. Westphal Jewelers in Hutchinson for the last six years, Westphal is opening her own store: Jules By J. Westphal.

“Just kind of a play off my name,” she says.

While her family is “supportive and excited,” Westphal says her father was shocked even though “I’m kind of the funky daughter.”

“I think he was a little bit blown away.”

Westphal describes her family’s store as a high-end bridal store that’s particularly focused on diamonds.

She’ll have a bridal section within her store, but Westphal says she’ll have another focus.

“I’m really seeking out of a lot of companies that are also helping others along the way,” Westphal says. “That’s something I’m really passionate about.”

Westphal says she wants “jewelry lines that have a cause tied with them.”

For instance, there’s one line she plans to sell that gives 10 percent of its sales to a group that helps educate women around the world.

“I’m also interested in sustainability, fair trade … eco friendly (jewelry).”

She says she also plans to sell vintage jewelry that she’s handpicked.

Though Westphal will be in her new space at the BloomHaus building on Sept. 1, she’s not planning to officially open until Sept. 30.
