Last week and earlier this week, Wichita State University didn’t have a lot to say about why its west campus near 37th North and Maize Road has been closed.

Now, the school is sharing a bit more information.

Via an e-mail from spokeswoman Lainie Mazzullo-Hart, the university confirmed that there have been water issues at the campus.

“During the abnormally wet summer last year, it was brought to our attention that the building was encountering water intrusion issues. Out of precaution, the university suspended offering classes from that location, shifting them to the WSU Old Town location.”

The e-mail also said a construction firm is doing a review of the building to assess the extent of damage as well as the viability of repairs before the school decides what to do.

“Those next steps could include repairing the building, demolition of the existing facility and reconstruction, or selling of the existing facility. Although the exact outcomes aren’t currently known until that assessment is completed, student, faculty and staff are always our primary consideration.”
