The more than 75-year-old Hart Pharmacy and Durable Medical Equipment is expanding through a new partnership with Family Prescription Shop, which has two pharmacies.

“We’ve kind of combined forces, I guess you could say,” says Jason Schmitz, director of pharmacy operations.

“We have very similar customer service philosophies and thought that we could complement each other very well.”

The companies will remain separate entities but operate as one under the Hart name.

The existing Hart Pharmacy is near the southwest corner of 13th and Woodlawn.

One Family Prescription Shop is within Primary Care Associates at 7111 E. 21st St. North between Woodlawn and Rock Road.

The other, which is known as Clifton Family Prescription Shop, is in the 1515 medical building at 1515 S. Clifton next to Via Christi Hospital St. Joseph.

As of Saturday, Schmitz says, “They’ll both just be Hart Pharmacy.”

Both companies offer delivery for customers.

“We might have some integration of delivery services,” Schmitz says.

He says that in addition to offering traditional prescriptions, the original Hart Pharmacy also does custom compounding and sells a full line of durable medical equipment, such as wheelchairs and walkers.

At the Family Prescription Shop sites, he says, “We concentrate just on the prescription filling itself.”

Now, Schmitz says, patients at those pharmacies can benefit from some of the extras that Hart Pharmacy offers.

He says Hart Pharmacy and its customers can benefit from the relationship the Family Prescription Shop pharmacies have with the physicians in their buildings.

“We work right alongside the prescribers,” Schmitz says.

If there are any issues or questions related to medications, he says, they can be addressed more easily with physicians who are in the same buildings.

“It’s a great relationship we have with them,” Schmitz says. “We feel that we can give an even better level of service to the customers.”

He says it helps complete the circle of care for patients.

Schmitz says that while Family Prescription Shop has good exposure within the two medical buildings, it’s not well known outside of them.

“It’s very difficult for us to get our name out there otherwise.”

Though Hart Pharmacy may be better known, Schmitz says there’s a benefit with adding two more pharmacies.

“It helps to expand the Hart name.”
