Paw Fit may sound like a business that could help your pooch not have a paunch, but owner Jerry Nguyen intends it to be a gym for humans who can also bring their dogs while they work out.

As people exercise at a the new gym at 230 N. Walnut in Delano, their dogs can play or be groomed. There also will be boarding at the business.

"This is a new concept that hasn't been done yet," Nguyen says.

He says something similar "started in Asia where you bring dogs to drink coffee."

Nguyen says it gave him the idea for the combination gym and doggie daycare.

"I just love dogs as a passion," he says.

Nguyen owns a few businesses, including the XY Bar in Old Town and the Store near Harry and Hillside. Like those gay bars, he says Paw Fit will be LGBT friendly.

"I try to be supportive to the community," he says.

Nguyen says Paw Fit will be open to anyone.

"It's inclusive to everyone."

The almost 6,000-square-foot warehouse space will have cardio equipment with television and movie options along with a variety of weights.

The entire property, which includes a yard, is almost 17,000 square feet. Nguyen says there will be plenty of room for dogs to play.

Though he has a lot of different business interests, Nguyen says Paw Fit is special because of how he feels about dogs.

"I just want to go towards something I want to do in my life."

Look for more information on both sides of the business closer to the time it opens later this summer.
