A new medical building is going to be built at 935 N. Hillside where Hillside Funeral Home had been for decades.

Elite Construction USA LLC is building a 6,000-square-foot medical office building,” says Wanda Whitworth of NAI Martens, who handled the deal.

Whitworth says the physician who will locate there does not want to be named yet.

The office is “supposed to be up and going by February,” she says.

The property is on 1.27 acres and has two buildings. There’s an 11,300-square-foot one in the front where funerals used to be held and a 7,200-square-foot warehouse in the back. There also are 72 parking spaces.

Last year, Have You Heard? reported that Hillside Funeral Home is still named for its original mortuary on Hillside, but it now operates only out of its west-side site at 2929 W. 13th St.

“We had a big decision to make,” Hillside manager Jayde Murray said at the time. “The building had a lot of upkeep that needed to be done.”

If there had been renovations, that would have necessitated also making the building ADA compliant.

“It would have been a very costly investment for us,” Murray said.

She said she thought customers also probably questioned if the facility was what it should be.

“Our west office offers a lot more to families,” Murray said. “Our west location is just much more functional.”

Elite Construction will demolish both former Hillside buildings before building the new space, Whitworth says.

“The demolition should actually be starting any time now if it hasn’t.”
