UPDATED – In August, Have You Heard? reported that Maize DQ Grill & Chill operators Jeff and Jana Pinney were considering several west-side sites for a new DQ and that they hoped to have it ready by this summer.
The process has taken longer than they wanted, and they’re still not there yet, but the site is 7575 W. Maple in front of the Target west of Ridge Road.
“We’re going to put another DQ just like the one in Maize right there,” Jeff Pinney says.
That’s if the 72-seat restaurant is approved. The site is zoned properly for the business except its drive-through. The issue went before the planning commission Thursday, which approved it with an 8-3 vote. Now, there’s a 14-day appeal period – and there is some opposition from residents near the area – before the Wichita City Council considers it.

If the drive-through is not approved, the Pinneys will have to pick another site.
“Dairy Queen would never approved it without a drive-through,” Jeff Pinney says.
Construction will start in late July if the Pinneys get the go-ahead.
“My goal is to be open the day before Thanksgiving,” Pinney says. “I don’t know if it’s possible.”
The Pinneys opened their first Wichita-area DQ in 2015 at the northeast corner of 37th and Maize Road in front of Wichita State University West and across from Menards.
Jeff Pinney says he and his wife, who also own a DQ in Hays, hope to open more.
“Three for sure. I think we’re looking at five total … hopefully.”
