A new Walgreens is opening downtown, but it’s not one of the Illinois-based chain’s traditional stores.
It’s called Community, A Walgreens Pharmacy.
“These are pharmacies only,” says spokesman Scott Goldberg. “They are brick-and-mortar specialty pharmacies without a retail front end.”
The pharmacy will be in about 2,400 square feet at 803 N. Broadway, which is the northwest corner of Broadway and Murdock.

This is one of two kinds of specialty pharmacies Walgreens operates. The other operates out of hospitals and medical buildings. Walgreens has more than 250 specialty pharmacies nationally.
Goldberg says these pharmacies have a particular focus on treating complex medical conditions, such as cancer or cystic fibrosis, and helping people with HIV, AIDS, hepatitis or transplants manage their conditions.
He says the support extends to helping patients adhere to their treatments, such as with refill reminders and automatic services for refills, and connecting them to programs that can offer financial assistance.
Key Construction is the contractor on the project, which is a remodel of an existing building.
Goldberg says he doesn’t have details on other possible Walgreens pharmacy or store expansions in the area.
There’s not a specific opening date yet for the community pharmacy, but Goldberg says it will be sometime in March.
