Taco Tico may reopen in former Taco Tico building

The former Taco Tico at 603 E. 47th St. just south of Broadway may once again become a Taco Tico.

“We’re working on it, but we’re not quite there yet,” says Greg White.

He and Kevin Raven of Pegasus 200 are partners in five Taco Ticos – at 13th and Tyler in Wichita and ones in Derby, Arkansas City, Newton and Augusta.

White says they’ve been in talks with the landlord near 47th and Broadway, but there’s no deal yet.

The landlord recently had stucco work done on the building.

“So it’s either going to be for us or for someone else,” White says. “We hope it’s going to be for us.”

He says he and Raven are interested in doing more Taco Ticos as well.

“I can see us getting a couple more in Wichita, but it’s just finding a good spot that works for us.”

In addition to the south side, White says, he’d like one on the east side and another possibly north.

There used to be more Taco Ticos in the area, but the corporate owner of Taco Tico went bankrupt. There are still some former franchisees who are in operation in a few other states.

White says those owners and Raven purchased the Taco Tico name out of bankruptcy.

“It’s just been a real mess since the bankruptcy a few years ago,” White says.

“We just slowly started opening a few more.”

The group that owns the name, Kansas City-based Taco Tico Ventures, may try to franchise the business again next year, White says.

He says he should have news shortly on what will happen with the south-side space.

“I wish I could say, ‘Hey, yeah, we’re going to do it.’ ”
