UPDATED – There’s a deal in the works for Lenexa-based Westlake Ace Hardware to purchase Wichita’s Williams Ace Hardware, but no one is discussing it yet.

“I cannot comment at this time,” says Alicia Weber, Westlake’s director of marketing.

“I know we’re working on a PR release.”

A couple of representatives of Williams Ace Hardware declined to comment, though the store’s employees have been told what’s happening.

Jim and Barbara Williams opened Williams Hardware at the southwest corner of Central and Oliver in 1958.

Today, the store is on East Central just west of Woodlawn, where it’s been since 1978.

The Williamses’ son, Jim, eventually took over the store and then sold it to the Dondlinger family – his sister is married to a Dondlinger – in 2012. Williams still works in the store, though.

There’s also an Andover Williams Ace Hardware at 642 N. Andover Road that could be part of the deal.

Another one in Goddard previously closed.

Look for more information after the Westlake deal is finalized.
