During the four years that Empower Martial Arts has been open on the west side, east-siders have been asking the business to come to their side of town, too.

Master Neil Beisel is answering those requests with a new location at 314 N. Rock Road, which is behind the Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers.

The original location is at 135th and Maple next to Dillons. Beisel says the new site is 3,300 square feet, which is “just a tad smaller” than the first site.

“We think there’s a big market over there … we’re not tapping into,” Beisel says.

He says east-siders have had a lot of interest. “However, they don’t want to travel all the way to the west side for classes.”

The second Empower Martial Arts will open on Oct. 8 and, for the first six to nine months, focus exclusively on Krav Maga, a form of Israeli self-defense.

“It’s very aggressive street self-defense,” Beisel says. “It’s what the Israeli Defense Forces use.”

Initial classes will be for adults only.

Beisel says Krav Maga is easy to learn and retain and doesn’t require an extensive martial arts background.

“It doesn’t take years of training,” he says. “We get a lot of people coming in that do security work or work in the prisons, and they need skills right away.”

Beisel says it’s great training for women, too.

“It helps them defend themselves against a bigger, stronger attacker.”

Beisel eventually will add classes for children along with tae kwondo, which the west-side Empower Martial Arts also offers.

There will be grand-opening specials and free classes to try. Find out more at wichitakravmaga.com.
