If the Maize Dairy Queen runs out of Royal Oreo Blizzards, it likely will be Steve Baxter’s fault.
The dentist is moving his 11-year-old practice from a strip center near 53rd and Maize Road to a new 4,000-square-foot building that’s under construction along West 37th Street across from a Kwik Shop entrance and just around the corner from Dairy Queen.
“That’s not a good thing for me necessarily,” Baxter says. “I like Blizzards a little too much.”
He says when he and his wife check on the building’s progress, he finds himself repeatedly saying, “Oh, let’s just go get a Blizzard.”
Baxter Dental Associates likely will move into its new space around the holidays.
After working for someone else for a year following dental school, Baxter opened his practice in Maize in August 2005.
“I think my mom was my only patient at the time.”
The general dentistry clinic serves patients in Maize and a number of surrounding towns.
Baxter says he’s moving for a few reasons.
“We’re pretty much just jammed in here,” he says of his current 2,400-square-foot space. “I really need two more operatories than I have right now.”
He needs six now, but Baxter will have eight in his new building so he can eventually expand with a second dentist.
Baxter says a freestanding building with its own signs is going to help with visibility, too.
“It’s so easy to get lost in a strip mall.”
When choosing his new site, Baxter says, he didn’t want to move far.
“Maize has been good to me,” he says.
And, no pun seemingly intended, “I have amazing patients out here.”
