Tentative deal for Learjet, union

Bombardier Learjet and the Machinists union reached a tentative agreement on a new labor contract Thursday afternoon.

Union officials won't discuss the details of the contract until today, however.

"We've got to put it in our members' hands first," said Machinists spokesman Bob Wood.

Negotiators are expected to recommend approval of the offer.

The union represents about 900 hourly workers at Bombardier's Learjet plant in Wichita. The current contract expires Monday.

Members of Local Lodge 639 are scheduled to vote Saturday at the Machinists District 70 at 3830 S. Meridian.

An informational meeting is scheduled for 10 a.m. Voting will begin as soon as the meeting is over and will conclude at 1 p.m.

A simple majority is needed to accept the contract. If the contract is rejected, a strike would require two-thirds approval by the voters.
