David Goubeaux

Executive director, Avita Health & Rehab at Reeds Cove

Goubeaux’s own battle with cancer gives him insight into the care of patients in the new 80-bed rehabilitation center on Wichita’s east side.

“I understand fear, doubt, pain,” Goubeaux said. “I have lived it.”

Goubeaux underwent surgery and chemotherapy after being diagnosed with two types of lymph node cancer in December 2011. Today, he says, “I am cancer free, a survivor.”

Goubeaux, 57, grew up in Ohio and went to Wright State University on a communications scholarship, placing third in the nation in one public speaking competition. After teaching business communications courses there, he joined a public relations company startup that eventually had franchises in 23 cities.

He worked in public relations and marketing for Ohio-based Huffy Bicycles before joining Coleman in Wichita, where he was director of licensing and new business development.

After running his own import company, Goubeaux “semi-retired” before volunteering and then going to work at Resort Lifestyle Communities at Reflection Ridge, a senior community in west Wichita where his wife, Liz, was activities director.

“I just loved the residents, loved the interaction,” he said.

He had just taken a job with an assisted living community in Jackson Hole, Wyo., when he was diagnosed with cancer and treated.

At Reeds Cove, which opened Jan. 1, Goubeaux oversees about 35 employees but says his real focus is on residents.

“I am the advocate for the residents, making sure they get the best care they can get,” he said.

Goubeaux and his wife have several grown children in the area. He enjoys skiing, hunting and other outdoor activities.
