Angela's Cafe & Cantina # 2 to open in former Poetic Justice space

WICHITA — A third Angela's restaurant is opening in Wichita, and it's still all in the family – sort of.

Pedro Perez Sr., whose former mother-in-law founded the restaurant, is opening Angela's Cafe & Cantina #2 in the former Poetic Justice space at 300 S. Greenwich.

He's calling it No. 2 because the Angela's at 901 E. Central is only Angela's Cafe, and the one near 21st and Amidon is Angela's Cafe & Cantina.

The late Teodora "Lola" Romero started the original Angela's on East Central in 1981. Perez worked there, too.

"She meant a lot to me," he says. "She was like a mom to me. I just want to keep her spirit alive. I want her memories to last forever and ever and ever."

Most recently, Perez has been living in Colorado.

"I always knew I'd come back to Kansas," he says.

He says he approached all of his former in-laws about starting the restaurant.

"I didn't ask permission, but out of courtesy and respect, I told them what my plan was," Perez says. "They've been very, very supportive."

His ex-wife, Maria Romero, says she appreciates that Perez is doing this to honor her mother.
