SCL Health System is relocating its headquarters from Lenexa to Denver. Though the decision will have some effect on its 100 local employees, it promises big dividends for future growth in Colorado.
The health care organization, which operates Providence Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan., and hospitals in Leavenworth and Topeka, anticipates hiring 750 more employees in the Denver area over the next four years, according to a statement released Thursday.
“Since 1873, when the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth first opened Saint Joseph Hospital in Denver, we have been committed to Colorado and its communities,” said Michael Slubowski, president and chief executive.
Although losing a headquarters stings, the move is not expected to significantly affect SCL’s local employment. Christine Woolsey, an SCL spokeswoman, said about a third of those 100 headquarters employees are expected to be relocated to Denver, but others will remain, including those in the information technology and risk management operations.
“The net job loss is very low compared to the growth in Colorado,” she said.
The headquarters move will not affect employment at the hospitals in Kansas — Providence, St. Francis Hospital in Topeka and St. John Hospital in Leavenworth.
SCL traces its roots in the area to 1858, when the Sisters of Charity was founded in Leavenworth. Over the years the Catholic religious order has established schools, orphanages, clinics and hospitals in the United States and abroad.
SCL Health System, a $2.7 billion health network, operates 11 hospitals, including four in Colorado, three of which are in the Denver area, and has health care facilities in California, Colorado, Kansas and Montana.
“By consolidating our administrative services in the greater Denver area, we will be better positioned to efficiently and effectively provide support services to the eight markets we serve in four states,” Woolsey said.
“While we will continue to grow in the western region, our heritage and roots remain in Kansas. We assure our Kansas-based patients and care sites that they will receive the quality care and support from SCL Health System they have come to expect.”
