Overland Park-based YRC Worldwide Inc. plans to sell the former Akron, Ohio, headquarters of Roadway Corp. in a move that could boost employment here.
Jeff Rogers, president of YRC Inc., the national less-than-truckload operation, said 50 to 100 of the 260 jobs at the site may relocate outside Ohio, some to Overland Park.
Rogers said the sale furthers the company’s plan to shed its former Yellow Freight and Roadway identities to operate as YRC. It also made little sense to stay in the large structure.
“It’s a big building, and we’re not using very much of it,” he said.
Akron employees who relocate outside Ohio would come to YRC’s Overland Park headquarters and other company sites in South Dakota and Iowa.
Others would move to other sites in the area. About 50 to 100 jobs would be eliminated and receive severance benefits.
