A lawsuit by a contractor is the most recent financial claim against the troubled owners of the former Rent-a-Center and Thorn Americas offices at the northeast corner of 37th and Rock Road.
Total Inc. of Wichita filed suit last week seeking $365,000 for labor and materials for a project at 8200 and 8300 E. Thorn Drive. Representatives of Total said they had no comment.
If that payment isn’t forthcoming, the suit asks a judge to direct that the buildings be sold to satisfy the judgment.
The buildings were built in 1988 as the headquarters of Rent-a-Center and are still among the highest-quality office space in Wichita. They have been owned by CIP Investments of Dallas since 1999.
The offices are leased to a variety of office tenants, including Via Christi, which has several hundred employees in about 80,000 square feet.
But CIP has run into trouble paying its bills in recent years. The Sedgwick County Treasurer’s Office shows CIP has not paid property tax since 2006 and currently owes $2.9 million on both buildings.
The Total lawsuit is the 12th legal action filed in the last two years against CIP by contractors and construction suppliers, although it appears some of the actions have been settled.
A man who answered the phone at the company that owns CIP said he had no comment.
