A German maker of environment-friendly building systems is set to build a small plant in Greensburg.
HIB-Systems of Meissenheim, Germany, has committed to build a 10,000 square foot manufacturing plant, the first in the new Greensbury Industrial Park, said Dee Chandler, director of Kiowa County Economic Development Corp.
The plant will employ 27 people and is expected to open in May, on the fifth anniversary of the tornado that devastated the town..
HIB got interested in building a plant after it was part of at mean that won a competition to build the environmental show house called Meadowlark House..Orval Howell, owner of O.W. Howell Construction in Lawrence, has volunteered in building the house. He said they were looking at breaking into the U.S. market and he helped persuade HIB to try Greensburg.

“Over the months I developed a relationship with the them,” he said. “I thought it was a good idea for them to come, and we put our heads together and they agreed.”
The company makes modular wall systems of wooden blocks that snap together like Legos. HIB said the blocks insulate very well, are far stronger in the wind, are easy to assemble and are made from renewable materials.
