Neurosurgeon, Wichita Surgical Specialists

Samuelson, who grew up in McPherson, traveled as far as Helsinki, Finland, for his medical training.

He said there's a reason beyond the pull of family and home for returning to south-central Kansas to practice.

"It's one of the greatest areas of need for treating stroke and related conditions," he said.

Samuelson, 38, graduated from McPherson College and the University of Kansas School of Medicine, then did his neurosurgeon residency at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, Va. He completed additional training at the Millard Fillmore Hospital in Buffalo, N.Y., and in Finland.

Of his decision to travel to Finland, he said, "I went because of a gentleman there who is one of the most respected and technically one of the best neurosurgeons in the world," he said. "I was willing to go anywhere in the world."

Most recently, he completed a fellowship at Barrow Neurological Associates in Phoenix.

Samuelson is also involved in producing educational surgical videos. He and his wife, Sharon, have a 2-year-old son. They enjoy boating and other outdoor activities.

Wichita Surgical Specialists is one of the largest private surgical groups in the country, with 37 physicians.
