Kansas milk production down from March

Milk production in Kansas in April is down 3.1 percent from March, but up 3.3 percent from a year ago, at 216 million pounds.

The production per cow averaged 1,785 pounds, down 60 pounds from March and down 20 pounds from April 2010. The number of milk cows was estimated at 121,000 head, unchanged from March, but up 5,000 head from the previous year.

Milk production in the 23 major dairy states during April totaled 15.5 billion pounds, up 1.7 percent from April 2010.
