Via Christi to show off new surgical robot

Via Christi Hospital will demonstrate its new da Vinci Robotic Surgery System during an open house Thursday.

The third-generation robotic system, which cost about $2 million, will be on display from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Via Christi Hospital at 3600 E. Harry. Visitors will be able to operate the system's robotic arms from its surgeon console.

The robot is Via Christi's second. The first one has been used to perform more than 685 surgeries since 2008. It allows surgeries such as prostatectomies and hysterectomies to be performed with only a few small incisions.
