When Walker designs the interior of a nursing home or hospital, there are more than just aesthetics to consider.

"There are a lot of little things, like how many hand sinks you have to have in each wing of a hospital, and what kind of flooring for infection control," she said. "It's very client driven."

Walker, a Belle Plaine native, graduated from Kansas State with an interior architecture degree in 2001. She went to work for a Kansas City firm designing professional sports arenas, then worked as a project manager for a furniture dealership, specializing in commercial spaces.

Walker and her husband, David, returned to this area to raise their two young children.

Health Facilities Group is an architectural firm that specializes in the medical field. Walker said she's designed facilities in Kansas, Oklahoma and Nebraska.

"I feel very fortunate to be one of five interior designers here," she said. "The work came immediately. They went out on a limb letting me do something I hadn't done before."

Outside the office, Walker and her husband have been involved in a bit of design work as well.

"We bought an old house in Mulvane and it was in need of a complete redo," she said. "We gutted all the living space. It took about six months, but we got it done."
