Duckwall stores closing as Alco tightens belt

The remaining 44 Duckwall stores will be closed and the company renamed, as Duckwall-Alco Stores refocuses itself on the higher-return Alco stores, president Rich Wilson announced Monday.

The company, which currently operates 214 broad line Alco stores in 23 states, will rename itself Alco Stores to reflect its new strategic focus, Wilson said in a press release. Forty-three of the stores will close and one Duckwall store in Hettinger, N.D., will reopen as an Alco store.

"After careful analysis, we have concluded that the small, limited-selection Duckwall stores no longer meet the needs of most shoppers," Wilson said.

Duckwall stores account for only 3.9 percent of the company's sales, Wilson said, and little or no profit.
