Prairie Wind Transmission, a joint venture between Westar Energy and Electric Transmission America, filed its siting permit application with the Kansas Corporation Commission for permission to build a new, double circuit 345 kilovolt transmission line.
The new line will run from Westar Energy's Wichita substation a mile northeast of Colwich to a new substation just east of Medicine Lodge and then south to the Kansas-Oklahoma border.
Oklahoma Gas and Electric will continue the line from the border to its Woodward substation.
The project is part of a plan the Southwest Power Pool approved last year to improve the regional electric grid by integrating the east and west regions. The improvements will ease the addition of renewable generation to the electric grid, officials said.
