Kansas is one of seven states to share in a $241 million federal Health and Human Services grant to create health insurance exchanges.
Kansas was awarded $31.5 million to the Kansas Insurance Department.
The grant will allow the design and construction of the system needed to operate the exchange, which will allow people and small-business owners to pool their purchasing power to negotiate lower health insurance rates.
HHS said the grant award is based on the state extending the new Kansas Medicaid/CHIP eligibility system and integrating it with the Kansas Health Insurance Exchange.
