Kansas cattle up 7 percent from last year

The number of Kansas cattle on large feed lots as of Sept. 1 was 2.2 million, up 7 percent from a year earlier and up 8 percent from Aug. 1, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Placements during August tied the highest number for any month since 1993 at 610,000 head, up 11 percent from a year ago and up 22 percent from July.

Marketings during August totaled 440,000 head, up 9 percent from August 2009 but down 4 percent from July.

The percent of August placements by weight was: under 600 pounds, 15 percent; 600-699 pounds, 19 percent; 700-799 pounds, 33 percent; and 800 pounds or heavier, 33 percent.
