Westar earnings up in the second quarter

Westar Energy officials announced this afternoon that earnings were up in the second quarter of 2010 and up slightly for the first half of the year.

The Kansas utility announced earnings of $53 million, or 47 cents a share, for the second quarter of 2010, compared with earnings of $38 million, or 35 cents a share, for the same period in 2009.

Earnings for the six months ending June 30, 2010, were $84 million, or 75 cents a share. Earnings for the first half of 2009 were $82 million, again 75 cents a share.
