Spirit AeroSystems pays penalty for environmental violations

Spirit AeroSystems has agreed to pay $132,500 in civil penalties to settle a series of alleged violations of federal hazardous waste management regulations at its Wichita manufacturing facility.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, during an inspection in July 2006, inspectors found a series of violations.

The EPA said Spirit generates significant quantities of hazardous waste, including industrial wastewater treatment filter sludge, primer residue waste containing chromium and cadmium, tetrachloroethylene and trichloroethylene waste from degreasers, and hazardous waste oil.

Currently, the state is overseeing the investigation and remediation of trichloroethylene at the site.
